3 Hair Highlight Styles Women Over 50 Should Avoid– They Can Make You Look Older!

January 11, 2022 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Aging is a natural and expected experience. Regarding hairstyles and colors, some women want to accentuate certain features that they’ve matured into and draw attention away from others. No matter what your hair goals are, hitting the big 5-0 is a major accomplishment, and what better way to celebrate this than finding a hairstyle and color that works for you and avoiding the ones that might not?

We spoke with hairstylists and hair experts about three hair highlight styles women over 50 should skip— not because they can’t ever look good on you, but because they have a reputation of appearing outdated or out of style.

Firstly, you might wonder why we often cling to what has always worked in terms of hair, and why it’s important to also let go.

Quick Hair Tip #1: Let Go of Past Looks

“The worst haircut to avoid isn’t necessarily a specific hairstyle, but avoiding hanging on to the past,” says Fae Norris, longtime hairstylist and colorist at Rock Paper Salon in Los Angeles. “People, women in particular, often get stuck in a hairstyle that worked in their youth but make the mistake of not updating it periodically,” says Norris. “Once you find a style that works with your face shape, texture and lifestyle, it makes sense to stick with it, but styles are constantly changing.”

This however, she says, doesn’t mean you need to jump from one “next new thing” to the other, but modernizing a style every few years will “keep a look youthful.” She notes that there were a lot of women rocking the “Farrah Fawcett-inspired cut” back in the day but days change. Keeping your mind open is the best way to find your 50+ style and what works for you, but knowing what’s “out” and why can help send you in the right direction.

This leads us to the three highlight styles you might want to skip and why many people over 50+ are leaning away from them.

Skip These Highlight Styles: Bleach, Ombre and Chunky

Hair expert and cosmetologist Ghanima Abdullah breaks down three specific hair highlight styles that don’t benefit mature beauties. The first is bleach-blonde highlights or anything extremely unnatural. “You really want to avoid bleach blonde highlights,” Abdullah says, noting that they can emphasize gray hairs and can even look like gray hair from afar.

Her next tip is to avoid ombre highlights— the ones that feature one solid color at the top of the head and gradually fade into another at the bottom of your hair. “Ombre tresses are another look that are just not for those over 50,” Abdullah says. She explains that too many drastic color combinations can lead to fading and graying, which leads to the last style to avoid.

Abdullah’s last highlight recommendation is skipping “chunky” highlights— a la Y2K vibes. “Most women, when they are starting to go grey, have grey hair in different spots of their heads,” Abdullah says. “If you have chunky highlights of bleach-blonde or silver,” she says, it will look uneven and might draw more attention to the aging features you’re trying to downplay.

Highlight Recommendations

Who said anyone over 50 has to look boring? Abdullah recommends seeking a “dimensional” highlight style at the salon, meaning these use three or four different shades of your original color. “If your hair is brown, the stylist will use successively lighter colors of brown, sometimes going up to a golden blonde color, but never a bleach blonde,” says Abdullah. The colors are applied sparingly in such a way as to increase the appearance of movement and volume. “Light will also filter through in the sunlight in a very attractive way. This is perfectly flattering for a woman over 50,” she adds.

Gina Rivera, hairstylist, Phenix Salons owner and founder of the “By Gina” product line says that highlights are a great option for women over 50 if the right color matches your skin and features. “Highlights are always a great option to consider,” Rivera says, “however, it’s important to consult with a salon professional to ensure that the correct shade is selected to match the skin tone and to avoid the look of being ‘washed out’”.

A good guideline for mature beauties overall, Rivera notes, is to select a look that “softens the features.” Face framing styles and layers are “great for this purpose,” she explains, while long straight hair may sharpen the features rather than soften them.

“It’s important to keep in mind that each person is an individual, as are their features,” Rivera says. “With this said, it’s best to work with a salon professional who is trained to look at facial shapes, as well as facial features, and can assist with selecting the right style.”

Overall, selecting a new hairstyle or highlight color can seem daunting at first, but luckily we’ve found plenty of inspiration in speaking with stylists, looking to celebrity trends and knowing what styles make us feel the most beautiful. Anyone 50 and over deserves to feel stunning, and these tips for your locks can help you start 2022 off with a fresh new look!

At Home Hair Care Tips for Shiny, Healthy Hair

December 3, 2021 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

“Invest in your hair, it is the crown you never take off.” – Casa Vera. That’s true at any age and any length. And though healthy hair doesn’t happen without some effort, nothing says you have to spend a fortune to keep it looking enviable.

If you already see your hairstylist regularly for trims and treatments, you’re off to a great start. But what else can you do to keep your hair healthy between visits? These tips for hair care at home will help.

Signs of healthy hair

The way your hair looks will tell you a lot about what it needs. With the right level of hair maintenance, here’s what Southern Living says you can expect:

  • Smoothe, shiny strands of hair
  • Bouncy hair with strong elasticity
  • Normal daily hair loss
  • Few tangles
  • Low frizz, even with humidity in the air
  • Minimal breakage

Now that you know what your goals are, here’s what you can do to get healthier hair at home.

10 Tips for keeping hair healthy

Healthy hair doesn’t have to be complicated – or expensive. Here’s what experts say is the long and the short of knowing how to take care of hair.

  1. Eat a balanced diet. Healthy hair starts from the inside out. “Try and include iron-rich foods like leafy vegetables, fish, pumpkin seeds, beans, chickpea, soybeans and cereals in your diet. Doctors suggest that you consume around 12 mg of iron daily. You also need protein because that’s what strengthens your hair. Include complete proteins which are also rich in amino acids: like cheese, milk, soy, lentils, peas, quinoa and yogurt,” shares NDTV Food.
  2. Don’t overwash your hair. Washing your hair too often strips it of natural, protective oils. Using shampoos that have too many chemicals can also overdry your hair and even trigger it to start over producing oils.
  3. Be careful brushing or combing wet hair. Invest in a wide tooth comb. The less you can disrupt the hair follicle, particularly when wet, the healthier your strands will be.
  4. Get hair professionally trimmed regularly. No matter how careful you are with your hair, the ends will eventually deaden. Getting them trimmed roughly every 8 weeks can help it stay healthy from root to tip.
  5. Deep condition on occasion. You should always follow up with a daily conditioner when you shampoo your hair. However, using a dedicated deep conditioner every now and again is a good idea, too.
  6. Avoid excessive heat, even in the shower. Let your hair air dry as often as you can. If you must use a heating tool, turn the heat settings as low as possible. Be sure to check the temperature of your shower, too. If the water is too hot, it can damage the hair’s protective cuticle.
  7. Invest in sulfate-free shampoo. The fewer chemicals in your shampoos and conditioners the better, but be sure to avoid sulfates and parabens whenever you can.
  8. Toss in the towel. Sometimes even the terry cloth fabric from your towel can be too harsh, especially for fine hair. Thin cotton, like the kind in most T-shirt material, is a cult favorite in the hair biz.
  9. Know where to apply shampoo and conditioner. As a general rule, avoid using shampoos on the ends of your hair (it can dry it out) and keep conditioner off your scalp (it can encourage excess oil production).
  10. Keep hair hydrated. No amount of anti-frizz serum can do what eight glasses of water a day can.

The consequences of neglecting your hair

Fail to take care of your hair, and you may notice it stop growing. If you can’t get your hair longer than a certain point, it may be due to neglect or active damage.

SkinKraft explains, “Slowly, you may start experiencing dandruff, hair fall, dryness and dullness. Not washing hair for long periods can cause ingrown hairs…Also, by leaving your hair unwashed for a long time, you are attracting more dust. Using wrong hair care products can make you feel itchy and lead to hair fall.”

Hair care FAQ

  • What can I apply to my hair daily?
  • Natural oils like coconut or olive can be applied in small amounts daily, though they may make it difficult to style your hair.
  • Is regular oiling good for hair?
  • That depends on the type of oil you use and the type of hair you have. In general, dry oils can be used safely and regularly.
  • Is hair cream healthy for hair?
  • As a rule of thumb, hair cream can nourish hair well, so long as it’s not overly chemical.
  • Does damaged hair dry faster than healthy hair?
  • Because damaged hair is more porous than healthy hair, it can actually dry more slowly.
  • In the end, healthy hair at home has as much to do with what you put on your hair as it does what you put in your body. Everything else you can leave to the professionals to help keep your hair healthy.

How to Ace your Back to School Hairstyle

August 16, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Back to school just make you want to go back to bed? We get that. After a whole summer of sleeping in and barely changing out of your sweats, it can be a real buzzkill. Then again, there is something to be said for the newness of it all. New clothes, new schedule, new classmates, and new school hair.

What if we told you that you could rock a new hairstyle for school without having to start your day any earlier? Sleep in and show up with a fresh hairdo—sign us up!

Here’s what to do with your hair for school, even if you don’t like getting up early.

      Princess Leia Buns

You don’t have to be a Star Wars fan to appreciate the sleek, effortless appeal of the double side bun. Commonly referred to as “Princess Leia” buns, these cuties are intentionally wrapped low around the ears for a distinctive look that’s quick to execute.

Simply part your hair down the middle, secure each side with a ponytail holder, then wrap the length of your hair around itself to create these signature strands.

      Loose French Braid

This elegant look is perfect for the first day of school or even your first day of practice! It’s lovely enough to complement your new school clothes, and practical enough to keep you cool when you head into athletics.

If you don’t know how to French braid, start by watching this French Braid tutorial. Then, all you have to do is pick the direction of your side part and give it a whirl!

      Headband Twist Up

Dirty hair day? No problem. This clever half-up hairdo features a semi-hidden headband that adds a layer of interest while concealing the unclean.

Pull out a few strands of hair from the front or side of your head. Use a silk scarf, headwrap, or bandana to tie underneath, taking care not to secure it too tightly. From there, you can carefully twist the freed pieces around the headband for an easy back to school hairstyle any day of the week.

      Casual Braided Ponytail

Remember that French Braid tutorial you just watched? Keep it handy. This casual back to school hairdo is perfect whether you have a case of the Mondays or want to celebrate the end of the week in style.

French Braid the top half of your hair down part-way down the back. Secure the remaining strands with a ponytail holder. Ideal for shorter haircuts with lots of layers, which can otherwise be challenging to wear up.

      Double Ponytail Braid

Few styles are prettier than a laid-back low pony. It can take you from day to night in no time, making it look like you spent hours on your hair. In reality, you only need a few simple tools and a couple of minutes in front of the mirror.

Part your hair down the middle. Use a ponytail holder to secure your hair at the base of your neck. Then, twist two separate sections around one another or do a short braid, and add a second ponytail holder underneath. Let some strands stay loose to add dimension. Curl or straighten for added emphasis.

      Space Buns

When it comes to cute back to school hairstyles, this one’s out of this world. Use Space Buns to show off your alternative side or simply try something new.

Create two triangle sections of hair on either side. Twist hair into a bun. Use a thin elastic band or two intersecting bobby pins to secure.

      Hippie Half Up

Half-up-half-down hair looks fancy, but that doesn’t mean you have to set your alarm clock back to do it.

Braid or twist thin side strands and secure them around the back. You can clip them, use an elastic hair tie, or even style the remaining hair into a bun!

      Adorned Top Bun

      We all have topknot days—and that’s a-ok.

If you want to give yours a little flare, you can secure it with a scrunchie or adorn with fresh (or fake!) flowers as a conversation starter.

How the Sun Damages Hair and What to Do to Protect Your Strands

August 4, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

The only thing worse than a sunburn on your skin? Sunburnt hair.

        Girl in the Beach

By now, most of us have heard enough horror stories to know that repeated applications of sunscreen are a must, especially as temps rise. But not everyone thinks about protecting hair from the sun the same way they do their skin—and that’s a big mistake.

Skin damaging UVA and UVB rays can also sizzle your strands, leaving them thin, frizzy, and unable to hold a curl. Couple that with fun summer pastimes like swimming, and it could be hard for hair to make a full recovery.

Regardless of color or texture, all hair types are vulnerable to sun damage. Knowing how to protect hair from the sun is the best way to keep your strands silky and healthy, but first, a bit about what you’re protecting against.

        1. Dry, brittle locks. Fail to protect hair from UV rays and you’re at minimum going to be dealing with dry, unmanageable hair. It’ll feel as crispy as it looks too, especially if you expose it to pool chlorine or salty beach waves.
        2. Discoloration. If you’ve ever colored your hair, it’s automatically more prone to sun damage. That’s because treatments can disrupt the hair’s cuticle protein known as keratin, making it more susceptible. Be prepared for that artificial color to fade or even change shades entirely, too. Sporting your natural color? Sun can easily damage its natural melanin, permanently discoloring your strands. For lighter, thinner strands, the impact is particularly disruptive.
        3. Thinning hair. Hair naturally thins as we age, but there’s no reason to speed that process prematurely. Expose your hair to sun and heat and strands can become so damaged they begin to thin.
        4. Untamable frizz. No amount of flat ironing or blow outs can save you if hair gets too sun damaged. The only solution? Sun hair care. (More on this in a bit.)
        5. Split ends. Sun damaged hair inevitably results in split ends and breakage as its keratin proteins disintegrate. That means hair won’t grow as long and always looks a little ratty, no matter how much styling you try to do.

How to prevent sun damaged hair

If you’re noticing your hair color shift or find that your strands are more unmanageable after exposure to heat and sun, don’t worry. Your hair care professional can help you get back to a good baseline. These hair repair tips can help, too.

However, the best way to prevent the sun from damaging your hair is to protect it. While you may not be able to avoid the sun altogether (unless you have a real bummer summer), incorporating these preventative practices can save your strands.

        • Cover up with a hat, scarf, or parasol. Shielding your strands from the sun is the #1 way to keep them protected. Avoiding peak sun hours and seeking shade when possible can help, too.
        • Minimize chlorine exposure. Pool chemicals, heat, and sun are a lethal combo. If you’re going to swim in a chlorinated pool, try to either dilute or shield your strands. You can wet your hair before you get in the water, lessening the amount your hair absorbs. Make sure you rinse or wash your hair as soon as you get out of the pool, too. Wearing a swim cap or putting your hair up so that it doesn’t get saturated is also a strategic move that could spare your strands.
        • Use a beach hair protector. Certain hair care products have SPF built in and offer good sun protection. You can also incorporate more nourishing products into your summer hair care routine, including masks, oils, and leave-in conditioners.

        Summer hair FAQ

Same as your skin, very little sun (if any) is really “good” for your hair. Minimizing exposure is highly recommended.

Is sun/sunlight good for your hair?

Same as your skin, very little sun (if any) is really “good” for your hair. Minimizing exposure is highly recommended.

        Does sunlight affect hair color?

Yes! Sunlight can strip your hair of its natural or artificial color and make it difficult to correct.

        Does sunlight help hair grow?

All humans need some sun to activate and produce certain vitamins and minerals within the body. But there’s a thin line between healthy vitamin D levels and thinning hair.

A Profound Take on the Beauty Industry

July 8, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Read Gina’s story as she was recently featured in Insights for Success Magazine!

My family has been in the beauty industry since 1929. I grew up sweeping hair off of the floors of my parent’s salon. I always loved the artistry of the business as well as the process involved with making people feel and look better. Move forward 40 years and I am the founder of one of the most successful suite concepts in the industry, Phenix Salon Suites.

The beauty business is a fast paced and rapidly moving industry. There is always something new coming down the pipeline and if you are not in front of it, you’re behind it. When I started Phenix Salon Suites I was looking to serve Lifestyle Professionals in their pursuit to become sole beauty proprietors. I realized that most beauty and wellness professionals partially entered the business because they wanted to work for themselves. I also understood that undertaking opening a multi-chair or multi-station salon required financial resources that many people simply didn’t have.

This was an insight that I was lucky enough to understand because I had worked behind the chair for many years and I had spent my life growing up in the industry. I believe this is still a trend that we are seeing. I recall when the suite concept was the elephant in the room. Meaning, we were beginning to have an impact on the traditional salon model but we had not yet emerged as a player in the industry.

Today, in the United States, the suite concept has taken off like wild-fire with multiple salon suite concepts spanning across the country. I am certain this is a trend that we will continue to see. With the emergence of the Corona-19 pandemic, the need for social distancing and additional hygiene practices has become very important. The suite concept is a perfect solution to this dilemma for the beauty and lifestyle professional.

As a suite owner, a professional services one client at a time in their suite. Items such as common waiting areas, shared wash bowls and equipment that is used by multiple parties are eliminated. In addition, the professional may customize their space to their liking with their own décor. They may set their own hours, establish their own prices, and use products of their choice. Each location offers on-site laundry and restroom facilities and, at the Phenix locations, a receptionist is available to greet and direct clients when they enter the store. And, all of this is affordable at the fraction of the cost of building out a full scale salon.

We are also witnessing trends with investors that are seeking out a franchise investment. The salon suite concept is a much more hands off model compared to many other franchise opportunities such as fast food. Once a location is built out and suites are leased, a franchisee is actually encouraged to step back and allow the professionals to operate their own businesses. Unlike many models, the requirement of being on location daily is far reduced.

Along with this benefit, the model doesn’t require the franchisee to purchase an abundance of products that they are continuously required to use in order to operate. The individual salon professionals purchase their own products and equipment for daily use which far reduces the investment required o maintain the suite model on an ongoing basis. As the suite concept continues to be investigated by interested parties, it’s certain that it will be a popular option for many.

I also believe we can anticipate seeing the suite concept experience international expansion in the next 12-24 months. Phenix Salon Suites has just extended our footprint to include the United Kingdom (UK), with our first store currently under construction in Manchester and several others in the planning stages. As of now we understand that there will be a period of educating professionals on the concept, however, I believe with certainty that the suite concept will be equally embraced in the UK. We also have a variety of other international markets underway which we expect to be very successful.

As we progress, technology has also become more and more significant in the industry. The cell phone has brought beauty into a world where salon and lifestyle professionals can now manage their businesses from the ease of their phone. And, it’s clearly notable that hardback appointment books of the past are headed for the shelf. Professionals are seeking interactive solutions which allow them to communicate easily with their clients. They are seeking simple touch booking and scheduling features that allow consumers to schedule their own appointments. They want to be able to order products with a push of a button and email receipts out without being burdened with paper.

To meet this need, last year my company developed a business app for the beauty and lifestyle professional called Gina’s Platform. The platform is 100% free to any beauty or lifestyle professional in the industry and it has a comprehensive booking and scheduling system as well as a POS (point of sale) system with some of the lowest rates in the industry. In addition, it has options for following trending beauty news, accessing online education and purchasing product as well as extensive client communication features. The app even has financial reporting features for end of the year tax time.

As mentioned previously, the beauty industry is a well-oiled, fast moving, machine. It’s always important to be looking ahead and leading the pack if possible.
