2022 is shaping up to be a banner year for hair. With the world finally opening up again, many of us are itching to shed our quarantine cuts and level 10 our grown out color.

Stylists are seeing requests for everything from tenacious trims to courageous colors that refuse to take a back seat. Some familiar favorites (hi, shag haircut) get an upgrade, while new hues take the spotlight.

Save these 2022 hair trends to help your hairdresser transform your locks – or ease you into something new and fresh that’s still in your comfort zone.

Haircut Trends

Put down the buzz trimmer and back away slowly. Women and men’s 2022 haircuts are all about shape and/or length.

If you’ve spent the last two years growing out your hair, you’re in luck. Waist-length “Rapunzel hair” is all the rage. A long statement braid could also be in your future. This one from @bluevanillabeauty combines two of the year’s hottest trends: jumbo braids and natural hair curls

@elev8dhairlounge also fuses natural with another sharp trend: the textured disconnect.

For those ready to make the big chop, there’s never been a trendier time. Octopus cuts, like this one from @kaloikoi, a take on the shag or ‘wolf cut’ as it’s known on TikTok, as well as Bixies (bob meets pixies) and blunt power cuts, are everywhere. They’ve been spotted on everyone from Billie Eilish to Florence Pugh.

This picture perfect bob example courtesy of @beautylaunchpad is another #doubletrend alert. More on that below!

Hair Colors for 2022

As we alluded to above, we’re seeing red absolutely everywhere we look, with celebs from Barbie Ferreira, Kendall Jenner, and Zendya coming up crimson. Something about the orange-cinnamon shade is capturing everyone’s imagination. And it’s snaps like this from @mc1r_poem that makes it easy to see why it’s also one of the most sought after hair and beard colors for men in 2022.

On the opposite side of the color wheel, we have ultra-cool ice blonde. Call it ‘ghosted’ or call it ‘gorgeous’…just don’t call it ‘granny’. This hip hue from @xeniaballiart is ideal for spring and can easily transition to a variety of sunny summer shades as the seasons progress.

Of course, if you’re like most of us, you have at least one @haileybieber hair-inspo picture on your pinterest board. Seems she and her locks can do no wrong. Her bronde “frosted” hair has come up over and over again in salons literally everywhere.

Behind the Chair shares that, “according to her colorist and Redken Ambassador Cassondra Kaeding (@ckaedingcolor), her bronde blend is a top request among clients.”

Hairstyles for 2022 FAQ

What is the new hair color for 2022?

Reds, copper, cinnamon, and other fiery shades are the look to watch this year. Practically the entire Euphoria cast has taken the leap, with other A-listers from Serena Williams to Sza following suit.

Is short or long hair in for 2022?

Both! Long and short hair both have their rightful places in the 2022 hair trend archives. From blunt bobs to ‘90s reminiscent bixies to curated fades, short has made the shortlist. Long, waist-length locks also have us hoping Rapunzel will finally let down her hair.

What’s the most popular hair color?

Why not all the colors? Graffiti hair is popular among Gen Zs and celebs like Dua Lipa.

If fortune favors the bold, any of the looks on this list will be an advantageous adjustment. Remember that spring is the perfect time to push your limits and experiment in the chair. Just remember that when making big changes, it can take some time for your eyes to adjust. Bringing pictures is also a huge help to ensure you and your stylist are on the exact same page. So long as you have a trusted, talented hair dresser or barber to guide you, feel free to let go and lean into your wild side!
