Tip of the Week – How to Treat a Sunburned Scalp

July 26, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

The summer can be a lot of fun but it also comes with the opportunity for sunburn. And, not just your skin, but your scalp can be a victim as well. Here’s my tips for treating a sunburned scalp:

  • Shower in cool — or at most tepid — water.
  • Skip using too many hair products as some may irritate a burnt scalp.
  • Allow hair to dry naturally or blow dry on the cool setting
  • Sooth the pain with cold compresses.
  • Hydrate the hair with a good deep conditioning treatment.
  • Stay hydrated.

What Is Eyebrow Threading and Is Threading Painful?

March 12, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Your face is a work of art – and your brows are the frame. Just like any prized piece requires dusting from time to time, your eyebrows need routine maintenance as well. Whether you’re looking to clean them up a bit or reshape your bushy brows entirely, brow threading (sometimes known as brow flossing) has a lot to offer.

So put the tweezers down and check out this centuries-old hair removal option. We’ll walk you through the eyebrow threading process and answer the question on everyone’s mind: does threading hurt? (Short answer, not really!)

What Is Eyebrow Threading?

For hundreds of years, the women and men (yes, eyebrow threading is for men, too!) of the Middle East and Southeast Asia have used eyebrow threading to groom their brow hairs and achieve the perfect arch. In the early 2000s western countries began threading their brows into submission, giving folks a less painful alternative for eyebrow shaping.

The technique removes multiple hairs at once, one line at a time, all using a single piece of cotton thread. It can also be used on other areas of the face, including the chin, sideburns, and upper lip.

How Does Threading Work?

Now that you know what threading is, let’s string together the process of threading eyebrows and how threading works.

Like the name suggests, it all begins with a simple brow thread. It gets twisted over on itself with one end held in the technician’s mouth or in a “double butterfly” looped and attached to two fingers on each hand.

The skin gets gently pulled until taut and the twisting loops act like tiny lassos, which wrangle and remove the entire follicle at the root. That means it’s super effective at grabbing even fine, stubborn hairs like peach fuzz.

Curious how long threading lasts? Since brows threading lifts the root from your pores, your post-treatment results can last 2-5 weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Not bad for an appointment that should take no longer than about 15 or 20 minutes (depending on how much consultation time you want).

The final eyebrow threading shapes speak for themselves, with ultra precise picturesque brows that can transform your face.

Benefits of Eyebrow Threading

The eyebrow threading benefits are numerous, but let’s start with an obvious question: is eyebrow threading safe. Short answer: the safest.

  1. Because the skin is spared from chemicals, possible cuts, and potential burns, even those with a sensitive disposition come away with nothing more than minor redness and slight irritation that usually dissipates over the course of just an hour or two.
  2. Since multiple hairs, even those that are virtually tweezer-proof, get removed at the same time, the result is quick and perfectly precise. It’s the easiest way to try a new brow style or give your arch a little lift.
  3. And no matter how often you thread the eyebrows, the maintenance between appointments is pretty much nil.

Threading vs Plucking vs Waxing

Eyebrow threading vs waxing ultimately comes down to personal preference. However, there are some clear advantages to threading up and browing down.

For one thing, you never risk a brow burn from wax that’s too hot for your sensitive skin. Good technicians are usually mindful of wax temps, so while not a huge risk, some people prefer cotton thread to a wax strip.

If you have a low pain tolerance you’re probably still stuck on whether it hurts to get your eyebrows threaded. So, once more for the seats in the back, does eyebrow threading hurt? It really does depend on who you ask, however, the consensus is it’s far less painful than eyebrow waxing.

It’s also precise like tweezing, minus the repetition since it can mow down multiple hairs at once.

Eyebrow threading costs are reasonable, too. Many brow threading professionals charge between $10 – $65 per session. Prices can vary depending on how much consultation time you need and whether it’s your first time threading. There’s usually a price difference depending on how overgrown you are versus whether you’re coming in for a simple upkeep appointment.

Book Your Eyebrow Thread Appointment Today

Still have questions about how often to get your brow hairs threaded or how long threading lasts, what threading does to your eyebrows, or how eyebrow threading works? You can use Gina’s Platform to book your threading consultation. Once you’re satisfied, you can easily secure your eyebrow threading appointment.

If it’s your first time, treat it like you would any other hair care appointment. Come with pictures of brow shapes and different brow trends you like. Have an idea of the thickness you want, too. Be sure to say yes to aloe aftercare and tell your technician if you have super sensitive skin or a low pain tolerance. You’ll want to baby your pores for the next 24 hours to be safe. Think: minimal makeup, skip steam and direct sunlight, and no touching!

Eyebrows and threading go together like Brook Shields and brow envy. Ready to make your face even more frame-worthy with the latest brow trends?

You can find eyebrow professional styling, tinting, and threading technicians near you by clicking the Skin Care tab on ginasplatform.com or on the Gina’s Platform mobile app.

Massage: Which Type Is Right For Me?

February 12, 2020 by coloursbygina Leave a Comment

The human touch is a powerful thing. For the last 5,000 years humans have indulged in massage for a variety of mental and physical health benefits. Different cultures have perfected their versions of the therapeutic rubdown, adding various techniques in the process.

Today, massage remains one of life’s most universally enjoyable experiences. There are hundreds of variations to choose from, so picking the right type of rubdown can be painfully overwhelming. We have consulted with massage therapists on what type of massage is best for different needs and different pains that you may be experiencing.

Don’t stress. Ahead are ten popular massage types and a little guidance to help you get the one you’ll most enjoy.

Best Massage for First Timers – Swedish Massage

Swedish massages are the most common form of bodywork – and for good reason. This ‘best all around’ rubdown  helps with a host of healing properties from improved circulation and relaxation to decreased muscle tension and joint pain. This is best experienced as a “full body” massage to dissolve your built up tension.

Best Massage for Relaxation – Hot Stone Massage

Sore muscles are best soothed into submission with a hot stone massage. The masseuse uses flat, warmed rocks to loosen muscles through heat transference. The combination of stone and hand kneading will melt mental and physical stressors.

Best Massage for Tension Relief – Deep Tissue Massage

If you have seriously tense muscles, and a high pain tolerance, a deep tissue massage may be the perfect remedy. This technique focuses on the deepest layers of your muscles and connective tissues. It’s a hurts-so-good type that will likely leave you sore after. Talk with your massage therapist about the best practices and activities to reduce the tension and soreness that may creep back in.

Best Mood-Lifting Massage – Aromatherapy Massage

Essential oils are said to emit mood-elevating properties. When these concentrated plant extracts are used in an aromatherapy massage, it can be a mood-altering, anxiety-relieving experience that lasts long after you leave the table. Ask your massage therapist about which oils and scents are right for the mood of your choice.

Best Massage for Knots – Trigger Point Massage

Does your back pain feel like it’s radiating from one particular spot? A professional trigger point massage could help “untangle” you by using a technique that micro-targets myofascial pain. This type of massage is very similar to a deep tissue massage. It mostly just targets specific areas of your body that are plagued by knots.

Best Massage for Athletes – Sports Massage

Sports massages take their cue from Swedish and deep tissue massages. They’re designed to help athletic types improve their performance while treating the soreness and pain that comes from being super active. This massage tends to be more firm to release the strained muscles that come from exercise and physical activity.

Best Fully Clothed Massage – Shiatsu Massage

Not sure you want to completely disrobe in front of a total stranger? Try Shiatsu massage. It hails from Japan and is known for increasing the body’s natural energy flow. Practitioners make rhythmic gestures over your clothes, using just their hands and palms to increase your comfort levels.

Best Rejuvenating Massage – Thai Massage

If you’re a yogi or simply love the feeling of stretching your muscles, definitely try Thai massage. During this interactive spa session your masseuse will manipulate and extend different parts of your body, using different parts of theirs. You’ll leave more flexible and energized without having to do any of the work yourself. A word of warning as more than likely if this is chosen as your first therapeutic massage you may leave more sore than when you first came in. Be sure to limber up and drink plenty of water!

Best Spiritual Massage – Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage is part of a 3,000-year-old medical practice that began in India. This full body treatment is paired with ancient techniques and oils that are said to have spiritual properties associated with them.

Best Massage for Specific Injuries – Neuromuscular massage

Neuromuscular massage is a cousin of the trigger point technique. It’s best for treating things like pulled muscles, back spasms, and lower back aches. It’s also good for helping heal soft tissue injuries by improving blood flow and oxygen levels.

If you are pregnant, especially in the early stages, some massages could be dangerous for your baby’s health. Please consult your doctor as to the best time to pause and resume your massages as some prenatal massages can be extremely relaxing and great for your mental state.

Ultimately, massages are supposed to be relaxing. Next time you find yourself stressing about which type to choose, consult this guide to make sure nothing rubs you the wrong way.

Gina Rivera Shares Her Daily Beauty Routine Which Includes Good Skincare & Bible Devotion

February 26, 2019 by coloursbygina Leave a Comment

What I love about Gina Rivera’s story is that she comes from a family of salon professionals. Born into the industry, she loved seeing how providing a service can truly uplift someone else’s spirits.

But as so many women experience, after having her firstborn child and threatened by the salon she worked at that she would loose her styling booth, she had an “aha” moment. Rivera wanted to give salon professionals freedom to own their own salon and launched Phenix Salon Suites, one of the fastest-growing salon-suite concepts in the US. She also created a line of styling tools and products that focus on restoring and protecting damaged hair.

You may recognize her from “Undercover Boss” that had a tremendous effect on making Gina a bit of a household name, and we couldn’t wait to interview this serial beauty entrepreneur and learn about her personal beauty habits.

Who taught you about beauty or was it something you discovered on your own?

My mother always taught me to take care of my skin. She was a stickler on telling me to take my make up off at night. She would always tell me to not skimp on facial products.
