Memorial Day Style Guide: Makeup, Hair & Clothing

May 13, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Looking forward to the long weekend? We feel that. Listen closely and you can almost hear those grills being cleaned as people prepare for their beach trips, lake stays, hiking adventures, and backyard bbqs.

Knowing what to wear on Memorial Day is a critical component – no matter how you choose to celebrate. As the unofficial start of summer, many consider the holiday the natural marker of the seasons. Schools are letting out, the temps are rising, and folks are ready to celebrate the day.

What better way to do so than to don some Memorial Day colors to wear for the weekend’s festivities? If you’re feeling patriotic, red, white, and blue is always a safe bet. However, you can also tone down the outright patriotism while staying true to the day by wearing stripes, denims, or shades of white.

With that, let the Memorial Day fashion planning begin! We’ve curated a lookbook of ideas that cover you head to toe from hair and makeup to threads.

Memorable Makeup Looks

Memorial day makeup is pretty simple. Or at least it should be. There’s a strong possibility you’re going to be celebrating outdoors. That means contending with the elements and potentially working up a sweat.

Just a few basics should do the trick. Think: bronzed cheeks, a statement brow, and effortless lashes. If you want to take things up a notch, a slick of red on the lips is always appropriate. However, if you’re off to a barbeque, you may want to opt for a glossy option and spare your host’s napkins.

Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen on hand, too. Pink, sunburned skin is absolutely not a vibe.

Hairstyles for the Holiday

Again, we say style with the outdoors in mind. When a big beach hat is in the mix, secure your hair in a braid or two. A simple updo is also always on point, but if you really want to show off your locks, have some hair accessories in tow.

We’re not the only ones who are pumped to see the headband make a comeback. They let your hair move without constantly getting in your face, a key consideration when there will be ample snacking involved.

Sick of seeing bandanas used as face covers? Use them to add a stylish flourish to your hair. Tie it in a knot atop your crown, or fold the bandana into a small triangle for more coverage and secure underneath your hairline. If you have bangs or fringe, we recommend pulling them out so they frame your face.

Clothing To Commemorate the Day

It’s always good to have a few different Memorial Day outfit ideas to choose from. Your Memorial Day style is ultimately dictated by your plans.

Naturally, a neighborhood block party will require different attire than a boat party on the lake. In general, a long summery dress is usually a safe bet. Stay away from heavy fabrics like velvet or corduroy, though it’s ok to throw a flannel around your waist for when the sun starts to set.

You’re also likely to see a fair amount of denim. Shorts, jeans, and jackets are all ideal for the day. If you’ve been looking for an excuse to try out white denim, now’s definitely the time.

Same goes for joggers. The look won’t feel right for everyone, but if you’ve fallen in love with a particularly cute pair of sweats, there are certainly ways to fancy them up for public.

As for shoes, it’s a pretty strictly sneakers or sandals situation. Going with the former? We recommend fashion sneakers instead of your running tennies. Also, we know white shoes can be a bit controversial, but in this case we say go for it! Sandals can be thick and platformy or thin and strappy depending on the rest of your Memorial Day ensemble.

For jewelry, we say keep it simple. A pair of gold hoop earrings can pull almost anything together.

One thing to keep in mind: some folks consider wearing the American flag disrespectful. Though that’s not a universally held belief, if you’re celebrating with a group you don’t know very well, it may be better to forego it just in case.

Memorial Day Style FAQs

Left with questions? We’ve rounded up some of the most frequently asked questions around what you wear on Memorial Day.

What colors should you avoid on Memorial Day?

Anyone who tells you what colors to wear on Memorial Day is really only stating their preference. You know your loved ones and how dressed up y’all like to get or not. Consider the locale and work backwards from there, knowing that you can go for the obvious colors (reds, whites, and blues), but you certainly don’t have to.

Why can’t you wear white before Memorial Day?

Spring and fall have their own color palettes, so wearing white before the unofficial start of summer can make it seem like you’re skipping ahead.

Can you wear white after Memorial Day?

Yes! Memorial Day through Labor Day is the ideal time to wear this crisp, light shade.

Finding a stylist is the quickest way to get you looking and feeling fresh for what is likely to be one of your first group outings in some time. Sign up now to make this Memorial Day the most memorable one yet.

Valentine’s Day Hairstyles to Keep You Cute in Quarantine

February 11, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

A socially distant Valentine’s Day may sound like a letdown, but just because you can’t hit the town with your sweetie, doesn’t mean you can’t look the part. Same goes for when you’re planning a zoom-giggle with your Galentines gaggle or treating yourself to a box of chocolates after a long bath.

Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, remember this is a day of love, something we all could use a little more of right now. Don’t let this be just another ‘X’ on the calendar. We may have to make our own fun, but with cute Valentine’s hair in tow you can mark the day in style.

There’s nothing like a holiday hairstyle to help you celebrate this season of love, so we’ve rounded up nine of our favorite Valentine’s Day hairdos to set your heart on fire.

        Valentine’s Day Braided extension

Easy valentine hairstyles can be just as breathtaking as the more intricate ones. This sleek ponytail turned robust braid is a great example. If you weren’t blessed with thick locks, a braided hair extension is your new best friend. You can get a pre-braided piece to quickly clip in, or you can do the twisting yourself. Be sure to wet your hair up top and use a tiny bit of product to tame flyaways.

        Valentine’s Day Fringe Ponytail

Want to be a little freer with your pony? Pull out some fringe in the front and around your ears. You can use a curling wand to give them a bit of a bend on the ends, or let them do their own thing. This style works great if you haven’t washed your hair in a day or two, but be sure to give your strands a spritz of dry shampoo to add a bit of volume. Valentine’s Day Space Buns

Space buns are a year-round way to showcase your inner adorable. Start by parting your hair down the middle in equal sections. Next, gather one side into a ponytail and use a rubber band to secure it, followed by the other. Take the tail end and wrap around in a circle then secure it all with another hair tie. You can give your Valentine’s hair a boost of romance by adding a few strands of baby’s breath or securing it all with pearl or glitter crusted hair bands.

        Valentine’s Day Braided Up-do

For upscale Valentine’s Day hair you definitely need to go with an up-do. These classy options showcase your bone structure and décolletage. In this braided version, there are multiple layers of lovely. It’s definitely heart eye emoji status!

        Valentine’s Day Wrap Around Braid

Braid crowns are the queens of the Valentine’s Day hairstyle. Not only do they look amazing with highlighted hair, they give you the look of love without exerting much effort. Just put your hair in two braids on either side and pin the ends under one another on top. Pull out some sparse tendrils around your temples to soften the look.

          Must Do’s: Blow Drying Techniques

June 23, 2020 by Mia Torti Leave a Comment

Help your hair by implementing our must do’s into your blow drying routine! With these simple and effective techniques, you will be able to eliminate damage and accentuate the beauty of your tresses in no time.

          Towel Dry Your Hair, First

Consider towel drying your hair (in a microfiber towel), then allow your hair to dry naturally. If you can, the sweet spot is getting your hair to be about 55-60% dry before using a blow dryer.

          Use a Heat Protectant

While a heat protectant can’t fully eliminate damage, it really helps. Apply the product and use your fingers or a comb to distribute evenly.

          Utilize the Diffuser

Using the diffuser attachment on your blow dryer helps to distribute the heat to reduce direct heat damage.

          Switch to Infrared Technology

My By Gina Productions line utilizes infrared technology that steams the hair rather than applying direct heat. It provides natural shine and locks in moisture. Click here to shop.

Keys to Managing Stress & Anxiety During Quarantine

April 28, 2020 by Mia Torti Leave a Comment

COVID-19 has taken over our lives and in return it has given us a new reality. In this new reality, we are learning about ourselves and those around us. We are learning how to operate our existence from our jobs to our free time. We are learning how to cope in any way we can during a crisis emotionally and financially. Every day, our reality changes and shifts.

We know that the stress and anxiety this induces is overwhelming. While everything is changing around us, we should find the time to connect with our inner selves to help bring relief. Here are a few key ways to manage stress and anxiety.

Our Keys to Finding Peace in a Crisis

Let us help you. Follow these anchors.

            JOURNAL

            write it down

Take the time to write down what you are feeling and how you are conducting your days. When the rain has stopped and the sunshine returns (metaphorically speaking) you will be able to look back on these days and see how you OVERCAME your obstacles.

              SHOWCASE

              share your skills

Go out of your comfort zone. If you are a skin care expert, film videos on how others can take care of their skin. If you are a hairstylist, teach virtual classes on the basics- how to do a blow dry on yourself or French braids. You get the picture.

                CREATE

                use your hands

Spend time creating with your hands. This is a great way to use a different part of your brain and relax. Painting, coloring, sewing, knitting, gardening, tie dying, refurbishing- the list goes on!

                  ORGANIZE

                  dial in your space

It is the best time to de-clutter your life and the spaces you occupy. That means going into that forbidden junk drawer or miscellaneous hall closet and getting to work. Clean out your closet, clean out your drawers, clean out your bathroom! You will feel more dialed in than ever before and a sense of calm will wave over you.

                    SWEAT

                    stay active

Keep your body moving. Exercise releases endorphins- the feel good, natural energy that is priceless! It helps keep your stress levels down and will help you blow off that extra steam you may be carrying.

                      HOBBY

                      try something new

Whether it be simply fitting in time to read that book you have put off or learn how to play that dusty guitar in the garage! Use this time to your advantage to learn something you haven’t had time for in the past. Immersing yourself into learning is an essential way to offset stress and anxiety.

How are you managing your stress and anxiety? We want to know! Please tell us on our Instagram @ginasplatform.
