6 shoulder length haircuts that can elevate your entire look

January 2, 2022 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

Medium length locks are among the most versatile hairstyles. They are universally flattering, low maintenance, and complement any signature style. No wonder they’ve remained one of the most numerous salon requested coifs over the decades. And while each era may be known for a particular flavor or style, trust us, a shoulder length chop is forever.

Next time you find yourself in the stylist’s chair, consider experimenting with a medium length haircut. Need some inspiration to know which version is right for you? Use these popular mid-length cuts as a jumping off point. (And when you do find the one, don’t forget to take the picture with you!)

Shag haircut

If this super popular medium length haircut sounds familiar, it’s because you’ve heard us sing its praises before. Shag haircuts will undoubtedly be remembered as THE haircut for 2022. Defined by its signature razor cut layers and a casual yet edgy attitude, shags are definitely a cut for it girls.

Coiffed and naturally curly

Make your curls or textured locks the center of attention by snipping them into the shoulders. It will help give your natural texture a lovely lift while effortlessly framing your gorgeous face. Trim the tips alone or ask for your shorter pieces throughout to give it some extra all-over dimension.

Blunt and bobbed

If your hair is fine and straight as a board, you’re the perfect candidate for this cool girl blunt bob. All you have to do is wake up in the morning, run a comb through your medium length locks and part it down the middle to look like you’ve stepped right out of an Indie rom-com.

Layered Locks

Want a haircut that gives your mane some movement? A layered shoulder length haircut is the way to go. Longer layers are best for those with thick or coarse hair while shorter slices may be preferable to add volume at the crown. If you’re somewhere in between or aren’t sure which one your hair will accept best, ask your hairdresser.

Shoulder length braids

Braids that blunt at the shoulders are taking this look to new lengths. All-over braids look great no matter the length, but there’s something so fresh about a box braid bob. Like the cut itself, braids are a fit for all face shapes, slimming down cheeks and defining the jawline. Works well with different types of braids too including, micro braids and twists.

Medium with a side of bangs

This chic look is as timeless as they come. While not recommended for every face shape, it’s a safe play if you’ve been wanting to experiment. Square, oval, and oblong faces needn’t hesitate to make the chop. However, round and heart faces may benefit from microbangs or crescent shaped fringe instead of slashing straight across.

Mid-length with a slight angle

Angled bobs were big a few years back. But that doesn’t mean they should be over looked on your search for the best shoulder length haircut. They add an element of interest to your ‘do and are very forgiving during the grow out stage.

You could look at galleries and galleries of shoulder length haircuts and never see the same snip twice. That’s because this always on-trend look has more variety than you can shake your sheers at. Whether your locks are thick, fine, or textured, you can maximize them with a medium cut.

xoxo,

Why Self Care is the Opposite of Selfish – And How to Make it a Priority

December 28, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

    Tap

Self care is a critical component of a healthy life. It’s also one of the most misunderstood concepts. People might mistake self care for selfish or self indulgent behaviors, when in actuality, it’s the opposite. The process looks a little different for everyone, but usually involves some sort of stress reduction and prioritizing of the mind, body, and spirit.

The idea is that the best way to reach your goals and care for your community or loved ones is to first take care of you. That means doing things like eating well, taking time to recharge, and exercising.

Sounds easy, right? Then why is our well-being and life expectancy on the decline? The truth is, we’re in an epidemic of depression and anxiety, making the importance of self care simply non-negotiable.

If you’re not sure where to start, following just a few of these tips for self care could give you the lift you need to really thrive.

    What does self care mean?

To understand what it is, let’s start by differentiating self care vs self love. The former, defined by The World Health Organization as: “the ability to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider,” are actions you take to maintain your physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Self love can be the result of good self care or the precursor to it. The term represents the overall feeling you have about yourself. Someone with self love is likely to practice self care instinctually. The rest of us usually just need to take the proper time and give ourselves full permission to make self care a habit.

    Benefits of self care

We’re more lonely, stressed, and unhealthy than ever, a recipe for poor quality of life no matter which measuring stick you use.

Devoting dedicated time and effort to your own self care can help you:

    • Stay present.
    • Improve your relationships.
    • Sleep better.
    • Increase your self esteem and self love.
    • Safeguard your mental health.
    • Perform better at work.
    • Reduce anxiety and depression.
    • Navigate stressful situations.
    • Prevent illness and disease.
    • Be more content with your life.

    How to do self care

Self care is a personal experience. It should be specific to you, a creative curation of the things that make you feel most, well, cared for.

Many self care basics are the same as those you learned as a child: proper nutrition, good hygiene, and regular exercise. However, you can build on this foundation by incorporating any number of self care practices that make you feel nourished. They can be as low-lift as you like and many of the best ones are completely no-cost.

    Some of our favorites include:

    1. Walking and stretching. Exercise is critical, but you don’t have to train for a marathon to see benefits.
    2. Meditating. Sitting quietly and focusing on your breathing for just ten minutes a day has been statistically shown to improve your well-being.
    3. Journaling. One page sometime during the course of your day is enough to get you started.
    4. Practicing gratitude. Whether you write it in your journal, do a review before bed, or have a gratitude buddy you email with, this is a powerful addition to your day.
    5. Drawing yourself a bath. Beyond good hygiene, baths can relax our muscles and our minds, melting away stress.
    6. Reading for fun. Yes, audiobooks count, too!
    7. Ordering (healthy) takeout. Cooking is stress-free for some, and full of stress for others. The main idea is to work in vegetables and nourish your body from the inside out.
    8. Working with coaches and therapists. No one expects you to do it all on your own. These professionals can work wonders on your mind and mindset.
    9. Taking our vitamins. Supplements can help give you a boost when you’re feeling lethargic, stressed, or otherwise imbalanced.
    10. Staying hydrated. This one’s easy. Just stop what you’re doing and drink a glass of water. Really.
    11. Taking technology breaks. Whether you leave your phone in another room while you sleep, or turn your phone on airplane mode at a certain time of night, just put some intentional distance between you and your devices.
    12. Treating yourself to a haircut or facial. How you look impacts how you feel. Engage in one of these relaxing practices anytime you need a quick refresh.
    13. Getting out in nature. Few activities have more built in benefits than nature. Even Yale says so.
    14. Spending quality time with loved ones. Trust us. You always think you have more time than you do. Savor the moment and be present.
    15. Saying no. Always remember: no is a full sentence.

    Self Care FAQ:

  • What happens if you don’t do self care?
  • You risk a variety of illnesses, mental dysfunction, and spiritual malaise.

How do you know when you need self care?

Irritability and low-energy are two of the first signs a self care event is in order.

5 Non-Negotiable Hot Tool Rules Stylists Are Begging You To Follow for the Health of Your Hair

December 13, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

We know that hot tools aren’t good for our hair. But if you love silking out your hair with a flat iron or adding bouncy curls with a wand, that inconvenient fact likely won’t stop you from achieving the look you desire. And that’s okay! As long as you’re extra healthy when applying heat to keep your hair healthy in the long run.

“Heat can dry the hair and make it brittle and easily breakable if the hair is overexposed,” says Gina Rivera, hair artist and CEO of Phenix Salon Suites. “It’s important to keep in mind intense indoor heat [from tools] can be just a damaging as overexposure to outdoor heat and elements.”

To make sure we’re causing the least amount of damage, hair experts say there are a few hot tool rules we should all be following.

5 hot tool rules to follow, according to hairstylists

      1. Use a heat protectant

“Never use any heat tools without putting protectant on your strands beforehand,” says Dominic Burg, PhD, a chief scientist, hair biologist, and trichologist at Évolis Professional. “Water is the enemy here, so look for treatments rich in oils. Our Promote Treatment Mask ($40) doubles as a heat protectant due to the levels of Baobab and flaxseed oils that hydrate and protects strands.”

      2. Keep the temperatures low

“Commonly enough, we all put our hot tools on the highest heat setting,” says Nicolette Rauchut, a hairstylist at Lrn Beauty in New York City. “All heat tools are not created equal. Some hair textures can not handle high heat settings causing breakage and dryness. Start with a lower setting especially if you have fine or fragile hair chemical services like keratins, relaxers, and color.”

      3. Make sure your hair is fully dry before styling with heat

“The high heat in flat irons and curlers can instantly vaporize any trapped water in the hair, aka flash drying, causing significant damage to both the internal structures, hair proteins, and cuticles,” says Dr. Burg. So before going in with any sort of iron, make sure all the moisture has been blowdried or airdried away.

      4. Don’t overdo it on the hair spray

For curls that last, it’s recommended to spray the hair with hair spray before curling—but make sure you’re not using too much. “Keep in mind that hairspray is a sticky product,” says Rauchut, noting that higher-hold products tend to be stickier than their lighter counterparts. “If you overspray a spot, the iron can accumulate more heat in that section, causing it to burn the hair. Instead, you should use a flexible hairspray when you curl and stronger hold hairsprays when you’re setting.”

      5. Be gentle around your hairline

“Flat iron curls have become the new at-home style trend, however, I have seen many front pieces burnt off,” says Rauchut. “This can be absolutely traumatizing for someone that hates bangs. Sometimes people have more fragile hair in the front than the back, which is entirely normal, especially if you pull your hair back or twist it. Between the tension and high heat, the hair is over manipulated and snaps. The way we fix this is to lower the heat setting when styling the front pieces. Also, keep in mind how long you are in one spot of the hair when styling so the heat doesn’t accumulate too fast.”

Gina Rivera: Creating a wave of growth by leading intentionally

December 8, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Since the last decade, the business world has seen an exponential rise in women entrepreneurs sharing the center stage. It takes an iron will and an intricate understanding of the industry to become a leader who inspires others. One such leader is Gina Rivera, Celebrity Hairstylist & Founder of Phenix Salon Suites. Being in the business since 2007, Gina has been offering professional & upscale suite solutions to beauty and wellness professionals who desire to become entrepreneurs and be their own boss. Considered as one of the top leaders in the industry, Gina, with a dynamic mindset has been inspiring leaders and setting leadership benchmarks for others to follow. Phenix Salon Suites currently has 320 sites across the United States. Their first store is now under development in England, with another 75 planned. They are also looking into additional international markets with intentions to expand.

In an interview with PerceptivX, Gina shared detailed insight into her journey thus far. Below are the highlights of the interview.

PerceptivX (P): How would you describe Phenix Salon Suites? What do you stand for as a business?

Gina Rivera (G): “Phenix Salon Suites is a leader in the industry and provides an upscale suite solution for beauty and wellness professionals who have the desire to become entrepreneurs and open their businesses. Further, Phenix Salon Suites provides the opportunity for sole beauty and wellness proprietors to own and operate their business in a suite at a fraction of the cost of owning a multi-chair salon. Our philosophy is to keep the Professional at the center of our decision-making process. We understand that if they are successful, we are successful. We believe it’s an honor to help others achieve their dreams of business ownership.

We also believe in providing support in areas that we can. We currently have a national scholarship fund where applicants that are seeking to pursue a career in beauty can apply to have their cosmetology school paid for. As founder of the By Gina product line, a portion of our sales is designated to cancer research in honor of my mother who was lost to the devastating illness.”

(P): How did it all begin? Tell us a bit about your journey and what led you to start Phenix Salon Suites?

(G): “Coming from a family who has been in the industry since 1929, I was destined to pursue a career in the world of beauty. As a child, I would sweep hair from the floors of my parent’s salon. At 17 years of age, I attended beauty school and later worked in a booth renter salon where I was blessed to develop a strong client following. I truly liked making my clients feel special and I always worked to improve. Later I opened my first salon and I realized how much I enjoyed sharing my knowledge with new stylists and offering support where it was needed. Based on these experiences I realized that not all salons are created equal and a majority of booth renters are provided very little support to ensure their success.

I had a deep passion for the industry but also for advocating and supporting the goals of Lifestyle Professionals. I was particularly interested in helping those who had the desire to operate their own salons but perhaps lacked the financial resources. I knew the options for operating a business in the industry needed to be redefined for sole proprietors working in beauty and wellness. With this, Phenix Salon Suites was born, establishing a new experience and opportunity for Lifestyle Professionals to own and operate a business without the heavy financial burden of opening a multi chair salon”.

(P): What is the secret to your success?

(G): “While I view myself as a leader, I also view myself as a person that has overcome obstacles and at times, naysayers. The skills that have helped me on this journey are the experiences that I have had throughout my career dating back to when I was very young. I worked my way up as a hairstylist and then a salon owner. I focused and tried to learn every facet of the industry. There is always new information, so I am always learning and working to understand and create better opportunities for the Professionals that I serve.

The main lesson that I have learned is that you must be humble and be a good listener. You need to have empathy for others. I think empathy is key to good leadership. Many great leaders are very empathetic people. Respecting everyone is important. For every leader, it’s important to be authentic and genuine as well. This is crucial in today’s business world. You are going to make mistakes and encounter obstacles, but you must be ready to learn from these experiences and move on. This is how you improve as a leader.

“As your leadership abilities evolve, more confidence emerges and it becomes easier to express ideas and share opinions.”– Gina Rivera

I think for me, the biggest barrier has sometimes been set by myself. To explain, I don’t believe that others can define your goals or where you want to go professionally. For me, I can get in my own way at times by putting limitations on myself. I have overcome this by always pushing myself to step outside of my comfort zone and attempt to achieve and learn new things. Rather than becoming dependent on others for my success, I believe that I must be accountable for achieving my own goals. Of course, there are always others that help you in their roles, but it’s important to stay focused and forge forward.”

(P): Who was your role model? How do you mentor other upcoming leaders?

(G): “My mother was my role model as a person as well as a businesswoman. She was a hairstylist, a business owner, and an incredible person that deeply inspired me to be my best. When it comes to mentoring, I have been doing complimentary speaking engagements in beauty schools across the country. I am doing this in an effort to share my story and encourage young people that have aspirations in the industry. For women leaders at any age, it’s really important to attend educational events in a person’s chosen industry. It doesn’t matter what stage you are at in the game. There are so many resources available, it’s important to seek out these opportunities and continue to grow throughout your career. This is part of what defines a great leader.”

(P): What, in your experience as a mentor, prevents women from growing as leaders? How would you describe the growth opportunities at Phenix?

(G): “I believe at times women can be afraid to speak up and express their opinions. However, as your leadership abilities evolve, more confidence emerges and it becomes easier to express ideas and share opinions. We have many amazing women working throughout our organization at various levels including executives, directors, managers, and coordinators. We also have women in virtually every area of the company from marketing to product development and construction. There are many avenues available to grow with the company into a variety of different positions depending on one’s area of interest. I also have many accomplished women on my International Artistic Team that inspire me to be my best every day.”
