People | These Are The 9 Best Rice Water Shampoos of 2022

October 7, 2022 by Ambrosia Hitchcock Leave a Comment

There’s no shortage of TikTok beauty trends, but one of the buzziest of late — using rice water on your hair — is more than just social media hype. Rice water (yes, as in the water that’s leftover from cooking rice) is rich in nutrients that can do great things for your strands. It actually has a long history of use in Asian cultures for this very reason. For starters, rice water is rich in amino acids. According to Gina Rivera, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Phenix Salon Suites, “[Rice water is] thought to aid in hair regeneration, since amino acids are well known for contributing to collagen production and increasing the strength of the hair.” The amino acids in rice water may also work to help make the hair smoother and shinier, as well as reduce tangling, she adds. You may have also heard rice water touted as a good hair growth solution. While that claim needs more research, it is good for overall scalp health, which is always imperative for healthy hair growth.

While you absolutely could cook up a batch of rice and then spray or rinse your hair with the leftover water (as TikTok suggests) there are actually shampoos fortified with rice water that are a much easier way to reap the benefits. All hair types and textures can use these shampoos, though they likely will have the best and most noticeable effects on coarse or damaged hair, points out Rivera.

October 2, 2022 by Ambrosia Hitchcock Leave a Comment

Feel like your hair is just less . . . there? Male and female pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia) is incredibly common. For instance, by age 50, half of white men see visible signs, as do about the same proportion of women over age 70. Genetics and hormones may affect hair health. In women, hair loss is also more common after menopause, when estrogen levels drop, she says. Your overall health and lifestyle are part of the equation, too. The List | Here’s What To Do If Your Flat Iron Burns Your Hair

September 30, 2022 by Ambrosia Hitchcock Leave a Comment

One of the first rules of styling your hair is that if you have straight hair, you want curls and if you have curly hair, you want it straightened. While some of us still struggle to find the perfect hot tool to do it all, the flat iron comes closest — not only can it can give you sleek hair, but with a little maneuvering, you can also create gorgeous waves.

But first, you need to find the perfect flat iron that does what you want, which is important because “it ensures that you don’t need to make multiple passes over the hair and further increase the likelihood of damage,” Gina Rivera, Phenix Founder and Celebrity Stylist, told Byrdie. This can also save you loads of time.

Most flat irons should only be used on dry hair, but some people make the mistake of using them on wet hair. Therefore, you need to use it on dry hair; otherwise, you’re damaging your hair.

If you use a lower temperature, the flat iron might not give you the silky, sleek look you want. But when you raise the temperature, there is always a risk of burning your skin and your hair. What should you do if you burn your hair with your flat iron by mistake? Read the details here!

InStyle | The 9 Best Purple Shampoos of 2022 for Getting Rid of Brass on Blonde Hair

September 27, 2022 by Ambrosia Hitchcock Leave a Comment

While it’s still up for debate if blondes have more fun, one thing is true: maintaining a bright blonde color requires some extra TLC. No matter what type of blonde you are, you’re probably  fighting to keep your hair color from looking brassy, orange, or downright green (yikes!). Thankfully, a special breed of toning purple shampoo treatments exists to simplify all that blonde maintenance into just one weekly cleanse — and it’s the not-so-well-kept secret to keeping blonde hair bright and beautiful.

Because purple is the opposite of orange on the color wheel, dark purple pigments counteract the brass, which help cool and tone your hair color. All you have to do is lather up with a quarter-size dollop of shampoo and rinse it out. Just don’t leave it on for more than five minutes, or you might find yourself with a few purple-tinted highlights.

However, not all purple shampoos are created equal, so we’ve rounded up a few that we count on to keep our own heads of hair the perfect shade of blonde. Keep on reading to see our recommended choices, and get ready to kick some brass!
