Trending 2022: Men & Women’s Cuts and Hair Colors

April 18, 2022 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

2022 is shaping up to be a banner year for hair. With the world finally opening up again, many of us are itching to shed our quarantine cuts and level 10 our grown out color.

Stylists are seeing requests for everything from tenacious trims to courageous colors that refuse to take a back seat. Some familiar favorites (hi, shag haircut) get an upgrade, while new hues take the spotlight.

Save these 2022 hair trends to help your hairdresser transform your locks – or ease you into something new and fresh that’s still in your comfort zone.

Haircut Trends

Put down the buzz trimmer and back away slowly. Women and men’s 2022 haircuts are all about shape and/or length.

If you’ve spent the last two years growing out your hair, you’re in luck. Waist-length “Rapunzel hair” is all the rage. A long statement braid could also be in your future. This one from @bluevanillabeauty combines two of the year’s hottest trends: jumbo braids and natural hair curls.

@elev8dhairlounge also fuses natural with another sharp trend: the textured disconnect.

For those ready to make the big chop, there’s never been a trendier time. Octopus cuts, like this one from @kaloikoi, a take on the shag or ‘wolf cut’ as it’s known on TikTok, as well as Bixies (bob meets pixies) and blunt power cuts, are everywhere. They’ve been spotted on everyone from Billie Eilish to Florence Pugh.

This picture perfect bob example courtesy of @beautylaunchpad is another #doubletrend alert. More on that below!

Hair Colors for 2022

As we alluded to above, we’re seeing red absolutely everywhere we look, with celebs from Barbie Ferreira, Kendall Jenner, and Zendya coming up crimson. Something about the orange-cinnamon shade is capturing everyone’s imagination. And it’s snaps like this from @mc1r_poem that makes it easy to see why it’s also one of the most sought after hair and beard colors for men in 2022.

On the opposite side of the color wheel, we have ultra-cool ice blonde. Call it ‘ghosted’ or call it ‘gorgeous’…just don’t call it ‘granny’. This hip hue from @xeniaballiart is ideal for spring and can easily transition to a variety of sunny summer shades as the seasons progress.

Of course, if you’re like most of us, you have at least one @haileybieber hair-inspo picture on your pinterest board. Seems she and her locks can do no wrong. Her bronde “frosted” hair has come up over and over again in salons literally everywhere.

Behind the Chair shares that, “according to her colorist and Redken Ambassador Cassondra Kaeding (@ckaedingcolor), her bronde blend is a top request among clients.”

Hairstyles for 2022 FAQ

What is the new hair color for 2022?

Reds, copper, cinnamon, and other fiery shades are the look to watch this year. Practically the entire Euphoria cast has taken the leap, with other A-listers from Serena Williams to Sza following suit.

Is short or long hair in for 2022?

Both! Long and short hair both have their rightful places in the 2022 hair trend archives. From blunt bobs to ‘90s reminiscent bixies to curated fades, short has made the shortlist. Long, waist-length locks also have us hoping Rapunzel will finally let down her hair.

What’s the most popular hair color?

Why not all the colors? Graffiti hair is popular among Gen Zs and celebs like Dua Lipa.

If fortune favors the bold, any of the looks on this list will be an advantageous adjustment. Remember that spring is the perfect time to push your limits and experiment in the chair. Just remember that when making big changes, it can take some time for your eyes to adjust. Bringing pictures is also a huge help to ensure you and your stylist are on the exact same page. So long as you have a trusted, talented hair dresser or barber to guide you, feel free to let go and lean into your wild side!

The 13 Best Hair Scissors and Shears for Cutting Hair at Home, According to Stylists

February 9, 2022 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

In the last two years, especially during the most stringent stay-at-home months of the pandemic, many folks have chosen to take matters — aka their hair — into their own hands. If you’ve been on the fence about trimming your own hair, but eager to prevent damage from split ends, the pros say you can totally do it yourself if you’re not feeling ready to go to the salon. You just need the right tools. We asked several professional hairstylists to share their best tips and tricks for cutting your hair at home. Naturally, they came up with some seriously smart suggestions, with one of the major standouts being having the right scissors or shears on hand. Turns out, not just any pair of cutters will do. Your tools of choice matter more than you would think.

“It’s important to select a pair that fits your hand well and glides easily through the hair when cutting,” explains hairstylist Gina Rivera, in regard to what you should be looking for when shopping for shears. “Some of the things that contribute to this are the material the shears are made from, the length, the handle design, and the thumb design.”

Of course, cutting shears can get expensive, particularly if you’re investing in a quality pair that will last for years — if not a lifetime. New York City-based hairstylist Adam Livermore says that the cost for a quality haircutting shear can go well into the thousands, but he wouldn’t recommend the DIY home-haircutter make that investment. Rather, he suggests looking for a medium-size (four- to six-inch blade) shear made of Japanese or German steel if you can afford it. “The Japanese-made shears usually have a sharper convex edge, which is good for point-cutting or ‘chipping’ into things like your bangs, while German shears usually have an opposing handle, which will likely feel more natural in a non-hairdresser’s hand as opposed to the offset handles that most pros use to avoid repetitive stress injuries,” he says.

As far as cheaper options go, some high-quality stainless steel shears from the drugstore will get the job done, so long as they’re the right size. “If you are an at-home novice looking for tools to cut your hair, I recommend getting a scissor that is four or five inches, as this will help to give more control on how much you cut,” says New York City-based hairstylist Kali Ferrara.

Before getting started, hairstylist Merrell Hollis suggests investing in a three-way self-grooming mirror. “The mirror has three panels for a 360-degree view of your head, which allows you to see exactly where you are cutting from three different angles,” says Hollis.

Once you’re ready to go, don’t reach for the kitchen scissors. Instead, here are 13 stylist-approved hair shears to help make your home cut look more pro.

Top Haircuts for Thinning Curly Hair in 2022

January 25, 2022 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

Thin hair can make even the most confident among us want to head straight for the hat section. Fortunately, a skilled stylist can make your hair wow, no matter the texture. If your hair happens to be thinning and curly, you’re actually in luck though.

Sure, fine curls are notoriously one of the most difficult combos to work with, but your natural curl pattern also works to your advantage. It has a way of diffusing thin strands. With the right thin curly haircut, you can maximize its natural volume and give your locks some much-needed definition.

Generally, that means going with a short to medium length haircut. Hair that’s too long gets weighed down and can unintentionally straighten your kinks. Adding layers throughout and around the face helps give your hair the extra body it needs to appear thicker.

Whether your hair is thinning from age, overstyling, or using the wrong products, pay special attention to this selection to find the best haircut for your fine curly hair.

    Curly shag haircut

This was unequivocally the year of the shag haircut. It also happens to be an easy hairstyle for thin curly hair because of how effortlessly it creates volume. The look is full of layers that help define and embolden your curls. Shags can be created with or without bangs, though they’re a simple solution if you’re looking to really add volume at the crown. Another selling point about this fine curly hairstyle is how well it grows out. If you’re someone who likes to wait long stretches in between cuts, it’s definitely worth adding to the short list of haircuts for thinning curly hair.

    Layered curly bob

Sometimes, you can’t beat a classic. Layered bobs are one of the all time freshest and most beloved haircuts for thin curly hair. One look and it’s easy to see why. Shorter layers allow your curls to kink up and stand out from the bulk of your mane. Cropping things at or above the shoulders also creates enviable body and volume. It’s a versatile style that’s universally flattering and can really showcase your curls.

    Textured pixie cut

Who says you can’t go super short if you have curly hair? Pixie cuts are one of the most low maintenance options since the cut adds such an instant and interesting shape to your strands. These thin curly hairstyles are also soft, flattering and diverse in terms of styles. If you’re looking for a trendy haircut for curly fine hair, this is definitely it.

Tips for Cutting Thinning Curly Hair

Your most important goal when performing haircuts for thin fine curly hair is to achieve fullness without the frizz. Wet and dry cutting is critical because it allows more control of the shape and length. Once dried you have an opportunity to zero in on places that could use some added definition while avoiding the dreaded triangle cut.

It’s also important to pay special attention to the ends and encourage frequent cuts. Dry, frazzled ends can really wreck curl patterns and drag thin curly hair down.

Next is to ensure the styles for fine curly hair are also fitting. Specifically, avoid heating tools, bleach, silicone sprays, and thick, oily products, opting instead for volumizing shampoos, light conditioners, and weightless hair foams for cleaning and styling thin curly hair.

Is fullness without the frizz really possible for curly hair texture? It is with the right haircut. The key is to make cuts while hair is both wet and dry. One gives you more control over the length, and the other helps you be more exacting with the shape.

Remember that natural curls will gain the most definition after they are tended to individually. That typically requires you to style the hair, then go back in and add some intentional pieces later. It’s also the best way to ensure you steer clear the questionable triangle cut.

Especially with short curly hair, the ends are particularly important. The more frequently short curly hairstyles get trimmed, the smoother and less dry the curl pattern will remain. It also keeps hair light and lifted instead of weighed down.

The final step is to double check that the styling products are right for natural hair. That typically means ditching heating tools, banning bleach, and tossing any silicone sprays or thick, oily products. Instead, fill your cart with volumizing shampoos and light conditioners. Follow up with a weightless hair foam and a diffuser if you want a little extra volume.

    Frequently Asked Curly Hair Questions

Committing to a hairstyle for your naturally curly hair is a big deal. Before you do, see if any of these questions sound familiar:

    • How can you make your thin curly hair look thicker?
      • The right cut, style, product, and upkeep all factor into thicker-looking curly hair.
    • Can thinning hair become thick again?
      • It is unlikely that hair will regrow once it’s been lost. However, some professionals recommend using a derma roller to help stimulate the hair follicles that are still active.
    • Is it better to cut curly hair straight or curly?
      • Straightening curly hair is rarely a good idea, even when it’s wet. Doing so can make the hair appear even thinner.
    • Can thinning scissors be used on curly hair?
      • Generally speaking, thinning shears should be avoided on curly hair as they can create additional problems like lost curls or frizz.

As you can see, hairstyles for fine curly hair aren’t limited, they’re just specific. True, discovering what is the best haircut for fine curly hair takes work, but once you find it, it can be life changing.

      Trendy Summer Haircuts for 2022

January 21, 2022 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Have you noticed how good everyone’s hair looks coming out of quarantine? Those who’ve already gone in for their summer snip are way ahead of the curve. The heat can do a number on your hair. And that’s before other factors like chlorine, salt water, and UV rays take their toll.

No matter how many failed attempts or quarantine cuts you went through this last year, a breezy summer hairdo can make you feel like a new person and keep your hair healthy despite increased exposure to the elements.

After too much time indoors, it’s time to (literally) let your hair down. Before you do, check out these summer hair ideas to mark your reentry.

      Stacked Curls

Summer hair trends come and go, but curly hair is forever. This layer-forward cut defines and showcases curls. Best suited for hair that’s naturally textured, it’s a fun way to work with or accentuate your hair’s inherent volume. Angles can be more rounded and subtle or asymmetrical depending on how trendy you want to be. Ask your stylist which gradient would look best with your textured locks.

      Long, textured layers

Summers are for adventures and memory-making, not standing in front of a blowdryer. Good thing this long, layered look requires minimal maintenance. It’s one of the longstanding best hairstyles for summer. All you need is a lightweight styling foam to help hold hair’s natural shape. You can also let your hair air dry and then spritz it with a few pumps of sea salt spray to give hair an intentionally messy, matte finish with a touch of texture.

      Chin-length bob with bangs

There’s a misconception that bangs and fringe are strictly for fall. Meanwhile, this ideal hairstyle for summer gets unnecessarily passed over. The truth is, when shorter hair is cut right, it practically gives you a wash-and-go maintenance level that can accessorize any outfit. Even a short bob pulled back in a ponytail and secured with a color-coordinated scrunchy is a look!

      Highlighted box braids

This multidimensional box braid is a standout among summer hairdos. It keeps hair safe, protected, and tangle-free as you set off for your summer adventures. Loaded with versatility, they really are limitless. Make them your own with different color strands, triangle sections, a combination of braided and loose hair, additions like beads, extra length, etc.

Cute hairstyles for summer don’t have to be lengthy. In fact, this summer pixie cut has become the go-to for many emerging from their cocoons. Said to be a sign of those who are ready to change their lives, this short and sassy style is sheer genius. (Pun intended.)

      Summer Hair FAQ

Cutting and caring for hair in summer is different from any other time of year. Keep these questions/answers in mind as you’re deciding which hairdo to do.

Is an undercut good for summer?

Undercuts are an impossibly cool way to cut your hair for summer. They take out bulk and can keep hair off your neck, allowing you to enjoy long hair without the hassle. Just keep in mind that they do take some time to grow back out. Talk to your stylist and see whether or not they recommend an undercut for your hair’s texture and thickness.

What is the best way to wear hair when it’s hot?

Hair pulled back or into a bun is a go-to summer look. However, some people prefer to embrace the sweatiness of summer and allow it to give their hair texture some added interest. You can also try securing hair under a scarf using a breathable material like silk to help accessorize your look.

Is it bad to straighten your hair in the summer?

The UV rays, heat, and exposure to chlorine can damage follicles and strip the hair shaft. Adding additional heat during the styling process can exacerbate this process. Instead, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, apply hair oil, and sleep with your wet, clean hair in a bun or braids to give your locks some non-heat produced texture. Worried about humidity? Try adding a leave in conditioner to the mix to help tame flyaways.

This is shaping up to be a much needed hot girl summer, especially after the last one we had. Make sure you start the season off right by finding a professional to give your locks some TLC. We’re standing by to help tame your tresses and get you looking fresh for your post-quarantine debut. Slots are filling up fast – schedule your session here!

Barbershop vs Salon: Which is Right for You and Your Hair?

September 16, 2021 by [email protected] Leave a Comment

        Inside of a barbershop

With the distinction among salon and upscale barbershops beginning to fade, choosing where to go isn’t always so (hair)cut and dry. Still, there are some defining characteristics that can help you understand how barbershops vs. salons differ.

Deciding between the two ahead of time can mean the difference between getting the perfect cut and leaving disappointed.

Are barber shops succumbing to salons?

Ever wondered if barber shops only cut men’s hair? While barbershops and salons used to be more gender-specific, today barber-salon concepts are showing up in trendy neighborhoods across the country. It’s a particularly large departure for barbershops, which traditionally served male clients and were found in neighborhoods with a large concentration of minority communities.

This shifting industry is now going back to basics, making it less about who’s getting the cut, and more about who’s doing the cutting. There’s been a slow role reversal over the years with more women looking to barbers to keep their coifs fresh and more men visiting salons to shape and style their strands.

Both barbers and stylists understand that great haircuts require good technique. And though the services offered vary slightly between the two (more on this in a bit) it’s how your hair gets cut that’s the biggest differentiator between a barber and a salon.

        Tools of the trade

Not all hair is cut the same way–and for good reason. Hairstylists train with scissors to help whip longer locks into shape. Barbers are a wiz with clippers and razors that offer clean lines and fresh fades.

As the name implies, stylists are also skilled at styling hair with blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. They also help with product recommendations to keep every hair in place.

Barbers, on the other hand, use different clipper guards to get a close, traditional cut that requires little to no maintenance between appointments. So do barbershops cut long hair? Well, that depends on the barbershop.

        Barber vs hair stylist training

You might be surprised to learn that barbers and stylists go to school for the same length of time. For 12 months they each study and practice until they’ve accumulated about 1,800 hours.

What they learn during that time begins their designation as one or the other.

For example, barbers are the only professionals trained to provide patrons a facial shave. Conversely, many stylists double as colorists, learning how to dye hair and perform highlights. They also learn makeup and nail techniques as part of their studies.

Who to call for what service:

Use this at-a-glance decision tree to help you pick the right industry professional for what you need.

        • Call a barber:
          • If you want a traditional cut (flat top, military cut, fade with lines)
          • If spending as little as possible is a priority
          • If you are looking to have parts of your head or face shaved
          • If you want your hair to be naturally styled
        • Call a stylist:
          • If you are looking for a more trendy hairstyle
          • If you want to make a big change with your hair
          • If you are hoping to partake in other salon services
          • If you want to color your hair or incorporate product into your routine

        Barber shop vs salon FAQs

Whether you’ve never been to either or simply want to make sure where you’re going is the right space or what you need, consider these queries.

        Barber questions

Can you go to the barbershop if you have long hair?

More and more barbers are trained to handle any type of hair. However, traditionally, short and sweet is their sweet spot.

Can a woman go to a barbershop?

Absolutely, yes! Though they have historically been more male-centric, modern barber shops accept a variety of clients.

Should you show your barber a picture?

A picture will always help ensure you leave the chair how you, well, pictured.

        Salon questions

What do you call a salon for men?

Barber shops are a common synonym, but most modern salons accept both men and women.

        Do all salons serve men?

t’s rare that a salon would turn away a client because of their gender. However, it can be a good idea to call ahead and find a stylist who’s proficient at cutting short hair before booking an appointment.

What is the process of getting a haircut at a salon?

Getting your hair cut at a salon isn’t much different than getting it cut at a barber shop. Still, you may need to get on their books ahead of time instead of simply walking in the day-of.

Still not sure which is right for you? Sign up for Gina’s Platform to see local barbers and stylists in your area and book a consultation!

TIP OF THE WEEK – How to help your child feel comfortable with getting a haircut

June 22, 2021 by Noelle Sim Leave a Comment

Most of us have encountered the small child that is afraid of having their haircut and possibly even visiting the salon. Here’s some of my tips for handling your littlest clients.

        • When the child arrives introduce yourself and take them on a mini tour where you explain what takes place in each part of the salon. (Note: start with the salon chair, visit the washbowl, show the scissors and the hair dryer)
        • Make sure to ask if they have questions and strive to answer all of them.
        • Keep an extra child’s shirt on hand in case the child refuses to wear the cape. (Hint: You can always describe the cape as a Superhero cape to get them more on board).
        • Explain to the child that they’re getting their hair “styled” or trimmed”. It’s best to avoid using the word “cut” as this can sound scary.
        • Keep a small treasure box on hand and allow the child to draw a gift at the end of the appointment if they behave and are brave.
